Dan Fishwick and Robbie Wells, both members of Morecambe Taekwon-Do Club, recently travelled to Coventry to compete in the 2012 GTUK Open Championships.

Despite fierce competition both students fought extremely hard and brought home a total of four medals between them.

The GTUK Open Championship is held once a year and provides an opportunity for Taekwon-Do students from all over the country to compete in both pattern and sparring events.

This year the one-day event was attended by over 200 competitors and the standard of the competition was very high.

The event also included an inspirational Black Belt Demonstration, which was performed by some of the most senior ranks in the country.

Robbie, who trains regularly with the England Squad, performed exceptionally well and took gold in both Junior Black Belt Patterns and Junior Black Belt Sparring.

Robbie will turn seventeen next year so this was his last GTUK competition as a Junior.

Taking the double gold is a great way to end his Junior career and it is hoped that he can have the same success when he moves to the Adult Category next year.

Along with attending England Squad training and regular club training, Robbie also attends Salt Ayre Sports Centre, Lancaster to ensure that his fitness level is maintained at the standard required for the England Squad.

Salt Ayre Sports Centre kindly allow Robbie complimentary membership of the facilities, for which Robbie is extremely grateful.

Robbie also competed in the Team event and his team finished in second position overall.

Meanwhile, Dan (a Junior Red Tag), impressed the judges in the Patterns event to take a bronze medal.

Dan is currently working towards his Red Belt and once he has completed this promotion test (early next year) he will begin preparations for his Black Belt Grading.

These are all great achievements for the Morecambe students who attend training sessions at Morecambe Taekwon-Do Club, Christ Church Hall, Broadway.

Patterns, sparring, destruction (adults only), self-defence and much more are taught at the club’s regular training sessions with Mrs Clement.

The classes are great fun, teach discipline and are also a good way to keep fit.

The club is currently looking for new members of all ages and abilities and beginners are very welcome at any time.

Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, children (under 12’s) at 6.30pm-7.30pm and adults (12+) at 7.30pm-9pm and if you are interested in any further details then please call Mandy Clement on 0782 8687 284 or visit www.gtuknorthwest.co.uk for further information.
