Dave Chisnall reached the quarter-finals of both the opening Players Championship events in Wigan at the weekend.

The Morecambe ace had good runs to the last eight before falling to first Belgium’s Ronny Huybrechts on Saturday and then darts’ greatest ever player Phil “The Power” Taylor on Sunday.

In the opening event at the Robin Park Tennis Centre, third seed Chisnall defeated Josh Payne, Andy Jenkins and Arron Monk to set up a fourth round tie with Colin Lloyd.

The man known as “Jaws raced into a 4-0 lead over the Morecambe man but he produced a sensational comeback to win 6-4 and set up a meeting with Huybrechts in the last eight.

The Belgian only turned professional at the start of 2013 but proved too strong winning 6-3 before going on to lose 6-0 to Robert Thornton in the final.

But it was a defeat Chisnall would avenge on Sunday.

After a first round bye, victories over Darron Brown and Steve Beaton, 6-2 and 6-3 respectively, set up a second clash with Huybrechts in round four.

This time the Morecambe man triumphed 6-1 to progress to face Taylor, the 16-time world champion coming out a 6-4 winner.

Taylor’s semi-final appearance was his best finish this year on the ProTour but he fell 6-4 to Stuart Kellett in the semi-final.

The Cheshire man was no match for in-form Dutchman Michael van Gerwen however who won the final 6-1 to take his sixth ranking title of 2013 after his five triumphs in the Speedy Services UK Open Qualifiers.

The next Players Championships of 2013, each worth £50,000 per tournament, will be held again in Wigan on May 25 and 26.
