Lancaster 14-14 Sheffield

LANCASTER started their defence of the ASA Junior Boys Water Polo Championship at Loughborough.

Sheffield took an early lead but Lancaster levelled through Noel Howson, only to see Sheffield retake the lead.

Sheffield soon increased their lead but after some determined centre forward play Sam Smith scored to reduce the deficit.

Sheffield’s centre forward increased their lead again. but Lancaster fought back and Sam Smith scored.

Sheffield then scored from seven metres but Mathew Calvert replied to keep Lancaster just one goal behind.

Sheffield again scored another seven metre goal, only for Ben Walker to snatch a close range goal.

This time it was back to the Sheffield centre forward as he regained Sheffield’s two goal advantage. Sam Routledge, sprinting forward unchallenged, scored as Lancaster were playing catch-up.

With seconds to go in the second quarter Sheffield scored to go into an 8-6 lead.

Lancaster were first to score in the third quarter through Howson and then went level when Calvert scored.

Sheffield fought back instantly to regain their two goal advantage but Calvert again scored a seven metre goal to cut Sheffield’s lead to one goal.

Sheffield scored two quick goals in the final quarter, but Lancaster replied through Smith, Calvert and Routledge to level the scores.

Sheffield then retook the lead, but Calvert levelled the scores again.

With only 40 seconds of the game remaining Sheffield scored to take the lead but Lancaster forced a time out with 30 seconds of the game left, Smith scored to equalise.
