Carnforth moved up to third in the Raging Bull North West Leagues Division 5 North with a big 36-7 win in their derby at the Vale of Lune.

A strong first-half performance was key for Carnforth as they gained revenge for a one-point defeat in the cup in November.

The visitors drew first blood, Sam Tomlinson and Mathew Short linked up to allow flanker Jason Short to receive the ball and he brushed aside would-be tacklers to burst over for the first try of the day, Jack Edmondson converting.

Carnforth increased their advantage when Mathew Short took advantage of a mistake in the Vale backs to sprint for a try before Edmondson scored under the posts, adding the conversion himself to make it 19-0.

The fourth try came on the half hour, young winger Ben Brocklebank finishing well out wide after Mathew Short’s pass.

There was time for a fifth before the break, Howard Neill crossing to make it 29-0 at the interval.

Vale hit back strongly but Carnforth stood firm, Tomlinson getting the game’s next score with Mathew Short converting to make it 36-0.

The hosts were on the board five minutes later however but the converted try was all they had to show for their efforts on the day as Carnforth continued their climb up the table.
