Following discussions with the league during the week - it was agreed that the Shield quarter final between Carnforth and Thornton Cleveleys 2nds would also be doubled up as the 4 North league game, and it was the hosts who came away with the victory.
Thornton were the better team early on and 18 minutes in they took a deserved lead with a well worked try, only for Carnforth to respoond two minutes later when number eight Jason Short burst though.
Jack Edmondon then put Carnforth ahead after cutting inside to score an excellent try which was converted by Mathew Short.
Short then made it three tries in five minutes after powering through the defence, the conversion was again kicked and Carnforth extended their lead.
On the half hour Mathew Short went on a superb run through the Thornton defence to score under the posts, Edmondson adding the extras before Short was yellow carded.
Skipper Dan Blenkharn added to Thornton’s misery by scoring a well taken try to give Carnforth a 31-5 lead at half time but the visitors pulled a try back early in the second half to give Carnforth something to think about.
However, 10 minutes into the second period Mathew Short completed his hat-trick of tries to give his side a 38-10 lead.
Shane Weed added a well earned try and Edmondson sprinted 70 yards to claim his second of the day, Nick Hamer converting before Edmondson claimed a hat-trick of his own.Thornton pulled two tries back but Carnforth ran out clear winners.
