Bowls competition is a Knockout

THE annual Good Friday Pairs Knockout Bowls Competition was completed at Lune Road in brilliant sunshine.

The standard of bowling throughout the day was exceeded by an exciting final watched by a crowd of enthusiastic supporters who had stayed to see if the previous year’s winners, Ian Nicholson and Martin Gilpin, could be beaten.

With Graeme Liver and Peter Eccles leading 20–18 and lying game with a wood alongside the jack it appeared they had won. However, with his last wood, Ian bowled the perfect bowl touching out his opponent’s wood to leave the champions with three to win 21–20, amazing.

The beaten semi-finalists were Steve Worthing and Eileen Pye from Blackburn and the Cumbrian pairing of Vi Dennison and Daniel Varcoe, who both lost 21–16.

Prior to Gill Simm making the presentations Lune Road President David Wray thanked Ann Roberts for sponsoring the competition and all the club members who had helped to make the event so successful and enjoyable for the spectators.

The next event will be an Open Pairs Knockout on Sunday, May 22, for which there are still one or two places available.
