Heysham Atoms’ Under 11s were 36-20 winners at Accrington Wildcats at the weekend.
Having loaned players to the hosts to make sure the game went ahead, the visiting Atoms made a sluggish start in East Lancashire.
The Wildcats’ strong defence set them up for the opening score with an enforced Atoms error kicking off an attack that ended with Accrington going over from close range on the final tackle.
Heysham quickly got things together though with Billy crossing for their first score of the day after a typical sweeping run.
The home side were then just held up short of the try line with the Atoms breaking out quickly with captain Connor completing a fine team move for the second try which he converted. After some good defence the visitors went into half-time with an eight-point advantage as Sam used an excellent dummy run to find the space to break free and extend the Atoms’ lead.
The start of the second period saw Accrington reduce the arrears to four with a quick try but again the Heysham youngsters responded. Connor led from the front with a score in the corner with Luke adding the two-point conversion.
The Atoms then forced an error from the restart with Hayden feeding Sam who produced an almost carbon copy of his earlier try, Nathan’s extras extending the lead to 16 points.
Billy then scored the try of the game, Josiah converting, as the Heysham side continued to defend well at the other end.
Billy then completed his hat-trick after Kian had forced a turnover with a late Accrington try completing the scoring.
