Lancaster and Morecambe youngsters star at county table tennis championships

Lancaster and Morecambe youngsters had a magnificent day at the Lancashire County Table Tennis Championships on Saturday.

The medal haul started with Matthew Knowles-Cooke finishing runner-up in the 19 event at St Bede’s RC High School, Blackburn.

Alice Dillon continued the successful run by winning the under 14 girls title in an all-Morecambe final with Naomi Collins with sister Megan lifting the under 16 crown.

Morecambe pupils made a clean sweep of the under 11 class when Torrisholme’s Matthew Westworth defeated Great Wood Primary School’s Toby Ellis in a closely-fought boys final,

Genevieve Holcharks, also from Great Wood, won the girls title.

In total Great Wood took four boys and four girls to the competition.

For the girls Zoe Grime lost out in the group stages, Eve Clement lost a close semi-final to Genevieve while Rachel Lister was knocked out in the other semi-final to Blackpool’s Emily Ireland who went on to lose to Genevieve in the final.

The quartet have also won through to the last 16 of the National Team Championships and will be back in Blackburn in late March.

As well as losing finalist Toby, for the Great Woood boys Ethan Walling reached the last eight with Joe Smith and Harry Constantine falling in the group stages.

In the North West Junior League, Abhinav Sinha, Adam Ordonez and Hudson Nuttal, representing Lancaster, had a successful day to take the lead with strong competition from Preston Cadets and Furness Boys.
