Kirkby Lonsdale hosted Penrith at the weekend and ran out 23-17 winners.

Penrith were the better side in the opening period of the game but it was Kirkby who put the first points on the board with a Tom Pickthall penalty after 10 minutes.

Kirkby extended their lead when Penrith were penalised in the tackle, skipper and scrum half Ben Walker took a tap and dummied over to score the first try, Pickthall converting.

Penrith’s number eight Toomata was then given a yellow card and Kirkby took advantage of the extra man when Walker scored his second try darting over from close range to give his side a 15-0 half-time lead.

Kirkby second row Nick Edney extended his team’s lead when he was unstoppable from close range, the unconverted try extending the lead to 20-0.

Penrith’s number 13 Bratton got his team on the scoresheet soon after, running round to score under the posts to make it 20-7.

A Barton drop goal edged Kirkby out to 23-7 but Penrith’s right wing McNaughton scored in the corner and the conversion was converted to make it 23-14.

Penrith slotted a penalty late on to narrow the gap to 23 – 17 but Kirkby steered the game to its conclusion to stay top of the table.
