With golfers travelling from the four corners of the UK and in glorious early autumn sunshine, the Morecambe Bay Golf Festival was a triumph for the organisers and for the three local clubs involved.

And in the end, a local golfer John McGinley from Morecambe was one of the overall winners of the coveted Festival Trophy.

He and partner Jim Hempseed from Merrist Wood near Guilford triumphed after rounds at Lancaster, Heysham and Morecambe amassing 121 points.

Since its inception 15 years ago, the festival has grown in popularity with record entries at this year’s event.

Already tee times are being quickly snapped up for next year’s festival.

Organiser Rob Kavanagh was delighted with the way the week-long festival had gone.

He said: “We have had tremendous feedback from golfers who enjoyed playing at three fantastic courses.

“Morecambe, Lancaster and Heysham golf clubs all worked so hard to ensure we all enjoyed success and for that I am extremely grateful.”

Rob and fellow organiser Sam Holmes are both stepping down from their posts and both were praised by the three local clubs for the way they have contributed towards the success of what has now become one of the north’s most eagerly awaited golfing tournaments. This year more than 2,000 golfers were involved.

The revenues raised by them will be distributed to Morecambe, Lancaster and Heysham and donations will be made to St John’s Hospice.
