Russell Penn’s wonder goal saw the hosts come from one-goal down to ensure their League 2 status for another season.

The veteran midfielder struck a superb 30-yard goal seven minutes into the second half and Morecambe failed to muster a response with a poor second half showing.

It was a different story at the beginning of the game however, as the Shrimps played some free-flowing football and shocked the home side by taking the lead after 10 minutes.

Paul Mullin started the move and found Padraig Amond down the left hand side with his pull back finding Aaron Wildig whose cross was turned in by Mullin from six yards out.

The Shrimps continued on the front foot and Wildig sent a chip inches over the bar before Laurence Wilson drilled in a low shot from 20 yards out that was deflected just wide of the left-hand post.

After a poor start York grew into the game with Jake Hyde twice firing wide from the edge of the box and Shaq Coulthirst curling an effort the wrong side of the left hand post.

York were rewarded for their persistence with a leveller on 32 minutes.

Penn sent over a corner to the far post and Stephane Zubar showed great strength to beat his marker and head home from close range.

The goal gave the home side a huge lift and they were much the sharper team after the break.

Hyde twice went close in the opening minutes of the half and was denied a goal by an excellent Kevin Ellison goal-line clearance.

The hosts’ pressure resulted in a second however when Penn beat Danny Ward with a right-footer that flew into the top corner of the Morecambe goal.

The Shrimps produced only one move of any note in response when Wildig shot horribly wide from Amond’s lay off as they suffered a rare defeat.
