But the former Rotherham man, a summer arrival at the Globe Arena, says it all went away as he raced towards the home fans to make his long-awaited Football League bow against Dagenham & Redbridge.

Thompson told Shrimps Player: “To be honest when Baz went down it was nerve-wracking.

“But as soon as I got onto the pitch, over that line, it felt great to be fair.

“Especially because it was the end where our fans are.

“It was good to run towards that goal.”

The 21-year-old was pleased to get an opportunity having been deemed surplus to requirements by the Millers in the summer.

He said: “I’ve been waiting for that day for about five years now.

“I haven’t had the luck and some times it is luck.

“But when I went on I was confident the lads would help me through the game.

“I just had to do my own thing really.”

The Shrimps put in a solid defensive display in the 1-0 win over the Daggers meaning Thompson was rarely called upon.

He said: “The gaffer just told me to enjoy it and I did.

“It was a great game. The lads were organised and the back five with Beels (Shaun Beeley) and Tom (Barkhuizen) were great.

“I didn’t have much to do or many saves to make apart from that last one at the end but even that was simple.

“I just had to keep talking and do a lot of kicking.”
