Miller misses out on match ball

Oh to be a fly on the wall when Shaun Miller had a word with Andy Fleming at half-time. Two goals in the opening eight minutes had seen Morecambe’s 14-goal striker well on the way to a hat-trick and it looked to be coming shortly after the half hour. Rounding goalkeeper Graham Stack the front man rolled the ball goalwards from a tight angle only for an offside Andy Fleming to convert from pretty much on the goalline. It was to set the tone for the rest of Miller’s afternoon as another exhibition of forward play somehow failed to bring him a third goal. It was a game that again underlined his importance but as the weeks on his Shrimps contract tick down it looks like an increasingly tough job for Jim Bentley to keep him at the Globe Arena, where he has reignited his career this season. There will be suitors aplenty.

Kenyon celebrates availability with goal

It’s been an up and down few days for Alex Kenyon. Harshly sent off eight days ago against Plymouth the midfielder celebrated the red card being rescinded by heading in Morecambe’s third on Saturday. His undoubted ability in the air is used in some Shrimps set pieces and this one worked to perfection, Kenyon peeling to the back post unmarked before heading home Lee Molyneux’s cross. It his is tackling the former Lancaster City man is best known for though and although not easy on the eye sometimes, here’s hoping last week’s red card doesn’t dissuade him too much, Kenyon having spoken before the match about his fears that some of the physicality is going out of the game. It wouldn’t just be a shame for players like Kenyon if his concerns are realised but also for football in general.

O’Hara unlucky to miss out

Jim Bentley’s big selection decision on Saturday was who got the nod in goal. In years gone by Barry Roche would have automatically returned after suspension but not this time with Kieran O’Hara having impressed against Leyton Orient and Plymouth in his absence. Roche did ultimately get the nod and provided a firm reminder of his qualities with key saves at key times helping The Shrimps to a much-needed win. O’Hara will get his chance again though with Bentley making it clear the Manchester United will get some game time between now and the end of the season. With his future at Old Trafford unclear could The Shrimps have found a long-term successor for Roche? As with Miller however, every performance sees O’Hara win new admirers.
