Shaun Beeley: We can’t keep letting the fans down

The 3-1 reverse against Luton Town at the Globe Arena on Tuesday night was a real low point in the season.

Boss Jim Bentley was heavily critical of his players as they conceded a string of soft goals.

Stand-in captain Beeley knows more than anyone that a reaction is needed when Bristol Rovers are the next visitors to the resort on Saturday.

The right back said: “All the lads knew it was a bad night.

“The gaffer was fuming. It wasn’t acceptable.

“All over the park we were second best.

“We didn’t do the nitty, gritty part of the game as well as we should have and he (Bentley) was right to be angry.

“He gave us a rollicking at half-time which could have spurred us on but as a team we were well below where we should have been.

“We all knew that we let ourselves down, the gaffer down and we let the fans down but you can’t dwell on things too long.

“You’ve got to pick yourself up and go again.

“I’ll try and help get the lads back up to go again on Saturday.”

Defeat to Luton was the second straight disappointing home defeat after Northampton triumphed 4-2 earlier in the month.

The Shrimps have had problems at the Globe Arena time and again since their move from Christie Park in 2010 and Beeley is keen to end this run of defeats sooner rather than later to ensure it doesn’t become a problem this season.

He said: “I don’t know whether it’s a mentality thing.

“You can’t go and do a solid performance at Oxford which it was (in the 0-0 draw last Saturday) and then come home and not put in a proper performance.

“We’ve been back on the training ground and hopefully we’ll rectify the problems we’ve had and get a better result on Saturday.”

Bristol Rovers may be newly-promoted but the tag barely applies to a side that ensured their exit from the Football League after 94 years lasted just one season with a play-off final victory over Grimsby in May.

Darrell Clarke’s men are currently 14th in League 2 just one point behind The Shrimps.

Beeley said: “They only went down for a season.

“They are more of a league club with the size and structure of them.

“They are newly promoted but they were a big league side and it will be another tough game. We’re at home and hopefully we’ll fix the things we did wrong the other night and get a good result.”
