Last season’s leader Mark Hughes was released in the summer and has since joined Stevenage meaning deciding on a captain is one of Bentley’s main items of business ahead of the new League 2 season.

The Shrimps boss is set to let a group of players stake their claim ahead of the opening game at Hartlepool on August 8.

Bentley said: “I’m going to work on it over pre-season to be honest.

“There’s a couple of names in the frame. There’s no reason to rush into anything.

“There’s a couple of players who are contenders but instead of making a decision now we’ve got quite a few games over pre-season so we’ll probably share it around two, three, maybe four players and we’ll make a decision leading up to the start of the season.”

The Shrimps open their pre-season campaign at Evo-Stik First Division North side Kendal Town on Tuesday, July 14.
