The summer signing from Wycombe has long been considered a front-runner for the role and led the side in the pre-season friendlies against Bury and a Liverpool XI.

Shaun Beeley, player of the year last season, will be vice-captain.

Shrimps boss Jim Bentley said: “We’ve had a look at one or two options but I think the stand out one was Peter Murphy.

“He’s a player who leads by example, he’s the type that wears his heart on his sleeve, he’s a winner, is vocal and drives people on around him.

“He’s got that experience of the level too.

“Shaun Beeley has had a great 18 months with us and been very consistent so he’ll be our vice-captain.”

Murphy replaces Mark Hughes who was released at the end of his two-year stint with The Shrimps and has since joined League 2 rivals Stevenage.
