Morecambe boss Jim Bentley says he will be looking for a response from his side after this second successive away defeat.

Three second half goals saw the Shrimps suffer a heavy defeat with Northampton’s aerial strength proving too much for his side on a disappointing night at Sixfields.

Bentley said: “It was a frustrating night because we knew all along what was going to come. We’ve watched them closely and we knew that they would get the ball forward as quickly as possible and use the long throw to their best advantage. That is exactly what they did and even though we knew it was coming it was difficult to defend against for 90 minutes.

“It’s pretty simple but its really effective when it works.”

He added: “It’s been a tough week for us with two really long journeys coming within a few days of each other and I am glad we are at home on Saturday. We have been doing well at the Globe lately and we will look to continue that run this weekend.

“Wimbledon have been struggling a bit of late but they have brought in some decent players on loan and it will be another tough test.”

After an even first half the Shrimps went a goal down when the in form Adebayo Akinfenwa headed a long throw from Ben Tozer past Barry Roche on 58 minutes.

Eight minutes later the Shrimps were undone for a second time with another Tozer long throw causing the visitors’ defence problems with Kevin Ellison’s attempted clearance beating his own goalkeeper and doubling the home side’s lead.

Northampton then added a third in the final minute with a top quality free kick. Louis Moult had scored for the home side but the play was brought back for an earlier foul and Ishmel Demontagnac floated the ball over the wall and past the helpless Roche.

The first half saw no goals and very few chances.

Morecambe went closest to opening the scoring on 11 minutes when Kevin Ellison was played in on goal and produce a fierce left foot shot that beat Lee Nicholls but came back off the right hand post.

A minute later the home side produced their first threat when Chris Hackett swung in a free kick from 25 yards out that had Barry Roche scrambling to his left hand side to make a fine save.

The second half saw Morecambe fail to threaten the home goal as they suffered one of their heaviest defeats of the campaign so far.
