North Lancashire League: Caton reclaim top spot as Cartmel slip up

As some clubs returned to action for the first time in eight weeks, recent signing Asa Stone scored his first goal for Mayfield with Rikki Ball adding a second before Steve Porter pulled one back.

Cartmel piled on the pressure sending everyone forward looking to snatch a late equaliser but Mayfield hit them on the break and Ball added his second of the game to dent Cartmel’s title hopes.

Caton United returned to the top of the table by maintaining their 100 per cent record with a 4-0 win over Galgate.

Galgate’s game plan was to thwart Caton at every opportunity which they did for over an hour, frustrating Caton and leading to them having a player sent off.

However, with 10 men Caton came to life and played the football they had showed earlier in the season and with just 20 minutes remaining they tore Galgate to bits by scoring four times.

Liam Moffatt scored a glorious opening goal, quickly followed by further goals from Joe Bouskill, Mambwe Chilfurya and the pick of the four from Aaron Tremble.

Lancaster Rovers all but ensured a second season in the top tier when they beat Bentham for the second time thanks to a single Simon Gillespie goal.

Although the better side they had a few scares before the final whistle.

Bentham had their chances but came across a strong defence and some poor finishing.

Marsh United entertained fellow strugglers Storeys in a must win game for both sides, with the visitors coming away with a crucial 5-2 win.

Antony Peters gave Marsh a deserved half-time lead but Storeys started the second half well and Steve Millar equalised within 10 minutes on the restart.

In the 63rd minute Millar gave Storeys the lead from a free kick some 25 yards out but within minutes Craig Gribbin equalised for Marsh.

Storeys retook the lead when a poor clearance from Farmer in the Marsh goal fell at the feet of Adam Airey just inside his own half – his lofted shot flew into the net to make it 3-2 with just 15 minutes left.

Airey then made it 4-2 with a free header at the back post from a corner with five minutes left and Luke Carpenter made it five in stoppage time to rub salt into the Marsh wounds.
