Lancaster City returned to winning ways and moved up to fourth in the Evo-Stik First Division North with victory at Prescot Cables on Tuesday night.

Goals from the returning Dave Swarbrick and Tom Kilifin helped the Dolly Blues to their first win in four league and cup games at a rain-soaked Valerie Park.

Back in the Giant Axe fold once again, former Barrow striker Swarbrick opened the scoring with a deflected shot from the edge of the area that looped over Cables ‘keeper Adam Reid who got a hand to it, but couldn’t keep it out.

The hosts were level almost immediately however, Robert Doran reacting first to a cross into the City area with his shot going in off the crossbar.

Both sides had chances to get their noses in front before the break, Gavin Clark seeing a point-blank header saved by Reid while at the other end City stopper Mike Hale tipped a great curled effort from Isaac Kusaloka round the post.

Played out in torrential rain, the second half was a much livelier affair, Swarbrick seeing two shots saved by Reid.

Kilifin also went close, testing Reid from inside the area with Mark Jackson appearing to be impeded by Dave Dempsey as he went to head home the rebound from close range.

City’s goal did come shortly after however, Simon Wills beating his man out wide and firing in a low cross that was converted by Kilifin.

The visitors should have then extended their lead from the spot after Kilifin was brought down but Ryan Elderton’s tame penalty was easily saved.

Clark saw another header blocked on the line before Swarbrick tested Reid from 20 yards as the Dolly Blues failed to find the killer goal.

It made for a nervy finish, Kusaloka firing wide Prescot’s best chance to equalise as City survived a late onslaught.
