Neil Marshall column: We’ve got a real chance next season

It’s been a contrasting season.

At the start of the campaign we scored plenty but let in far too many goals.

The second half has been brilliant though, especially how we’ve defended.

The gaffer (Darren Peacock) and Trevor (Sinclair) have a philosophy about how we should play and from the turn of the year it all clicked.

Even with some of our poor performances before Christmas we’ve ended up with the fourth or fifth best defensive record which shows just how well we’ve done in the last few months of the season.

Across the season we’ve only maybe been outplayed in one game, against Spennymoor at home, but apart from that we’ve held our own.

We’ve done especially well against the top teams and Salford, who won the league, said we were the best team they’d faced when we won 2-0 at their place.

The way we’ve played in those games and since the turn of the year in general means we’re all really looking forward to next season already.

There’s a really good team spirit under Darren and Trevor.

In the past we’ve had players from here, there and everywhere but we’re pretty much all from the Lancaster and Morecambe area.

It’s young squad too and the lads have got a full year in the division under their belts now.

Some of the ones who are 19, 20 and 21 have a couple of year’s experience meaning we’re getting to the stage where the fact we have a young squad can’t be used as an excuse if we don’t challenge at the right end of the table.

The league next year also looks like it will have less money men and be more open.

It we pick up from where we left off we’ve got a real chance.
