Neil Marshall column: No better result than 1-0

For me as a defender there’s no better result than a 1-0 win – especially away from home against a top side.

We went to Northwich Victoria on Saturday knowing they were flying high and in title contention.

They had a couple of chances in the first 10 minutes but after that we put in probably our best away performance of the season.

The only downside was seeing my header ruled out for offside!

To be honest, I couldn’t really tell whether it was the right decision because I was fully focused on the ball and wasn’t aware of my position.

It’s good to get amongst the goals but my tally is irrelevant as long as the team keeps on winning.

The performance at Northwich was one that epitomised how we’ve started the year.

We’re really solid and organised at the back and creating chances at the other end.

We’ve always known we’d be able to score goals but it was the individual errors that hurt us in the first half of the season.

But we’ve cut them out and everything seems to have clicked as we’ve gone on a fine run in 2015.

We can’t get carried away though and it’s about going from game to game and trying to keep up all our good work.

Next up for us is struggling Prescot Cables on Saturday.

They may be third from bottom (in the Evo-Stik First Division North) but we know there are no easy games in the division.

It was easy to get ourselves up to face a side near the top of the division in Northwich but this Saturday we’ve got to forget who we’re playing and keep doing what we’ve been doing well.

We know we’re climbing the table but we’re no focusing on that.

Plenty of sides still have games in hand on each other so it’s difficult to gauge.

When we do have a good look in a few weeks though I’m confident we’ll be pleasantly surprised.
