Lancaster City boss Darren Peacock says he can’t wait to get going with his side returning for pre-season training tonight, Thursday.
The Dolly Blues chief expects around 30 players to be involved in the first of seven sessions ahead of the opening friendly against Blackpool at Giant Axe on July 11.
The group at Morecambe High School is set to include familiar faces from last season’s squad, reverse team youngsters and some players recommended to Peacock and his assistant Trevor Sinclair.
No new arrivals at Giant Axe have thus far been announced with the former Newcastle and Blackburn defender keen to take a look at new players before inviting them to join Lancaster’s tilt at promotion from the Evo-Stik First Division North in 2015-2016.
Peacock, set for his third full season as City boss, said: “We’ve got a schedule for six weeks and we’re happy with the programme we’ve got ahead of the season starting.
“We’ve got around 30 players coming along some of whom we won’t know much about.
“We’ve done as much homework as we can on them but we want to check them out.
“The first couple of sessions (on Thursday and Saturday) will be just about getting back into it before we up the ante next week.
“It’s not all about the Blackpool game but we don’t want to be left behind in terms of fitness.”
While keen to get stuck in to training ahead of the new campaign starting in August Peacock admits it fells strangely early to be getting going in June.
He said: “It does seem weird to be back so early but I know all the lads are really looking forward it.
“I’m really looking forward to this season.”
Tonight’s first session is at Morecambe High School with the rest set for Lancaster University.
The fixtures for the new Evo-Stik First Division North season are set to be released on Friday, July 17.
