LANCASTER City boss Tony Hesketh expects to have the majority of last season’s squad intact when they reconvene for pre-season training next week.

Lee Dodgson, Alex Kenyon and Martin Fearon have already left Giant Axe for pastures new but the City boss told the Lancaster Guardian the players he’d spoken to were raring to go.

The squad will also be supplemented by around half a dozen trialists who will be put through their paces during City’s pre-season friendlies which start at home to Dundee FC on Saturday, July 7.

Hesketh said: “We’ve got a number of trialists lined up to complement what we’ve already got, there’s one or two interesting characters and I’m looking forward to seeing how they fit in.

“I don’t think many will be leaving. Lee Dodgson, Alex Kenyon and Martin Fearon are the obvious departures but I’ve spoken to most of the boys and they’re up for it (next season).

“I’m also delighted to see how the supporters fund has gained momentum and continues to grow. It’s a fantastic effort.”

The player’s start pre-season at Giant Axe next Thursday, July 5, two days before the Dundee game. and Hesketh expects his players to come back in good shape.

Hesketh said: “The Scottish fixtures are always early because of when their season starts but it’s not a problem because the best way to get fit is through games.

“A lot of the boys are on holiday so it can be a bit disjointed at this time of this year but pre-season is a necessary evil and I expect all the players will come back having looked after themselves.

“They’ll all have been in the gym and what not. The problems of yesteryear with players returning out of shape have gone.”

* Lancaster City are inviting local businesses to enter their K Club draw.

Businesses who enter will receive an advertising board at Giant Axe, a half page programme advert for the whole season, and a home match sponsorship for ten guests, with the first prize winners becoming the club’s official front of shirt sponsors next season.
