LANCASTER City boss Tony Hesketh is “delighted” the President’s Cup has been removed from the Evo-Stik League calendar next season.
City won the trophy last year, their first silverware for a decade, but league officials have decided the competition is one too many for clubs in the North and South divisions.
And despite lifting the cup after the 3-1 win over Belper Town, Hesketh has applauded the league’s decision.
He said: “I’m delighted. The cup competitions do cause congestion in our season. We played about 15 or 16 cup games last year in addition to the 44 league games, It’s difficult to fit it all in.”
The league, who cited poor attendances and clubs losing money on President’s Cup ties last season as reasons for deferring the competition for at least a year, announced the trophy would be awarded to the club with the best fair play record, which City have had for the last two years.
