LANCASTER City’s Alex Meaney has been voted the best player at a prestigious youth football tournament in Italy.
The Myerscough College student captained the England Colleges Football Association team (ECFA) at the prestigious Caput Mundi Roma Under 19s Football tournament held in Ostia, Rome.
And the 18-year-old picked up two man of the match awards in his three games for the Three Lions to win the Player of the Tournament gong. Meaney was presented with an engraved glass trophy by the president of the Lazio Football Association at the winner’s presentation at the end of the week-long tournament.
Phil Brown, the Dolly Blues’ assistant boss and head of Myerscough College’s Football Development Centre, said: “This award recognises Alex as one of the best young footballers in Europe as he was the stand out player of the tournament.
“Alex had the added pressure of captaining the ECFA national side against some very strong European competition which demonstrates what an exceptional talent he is.
“Everyone involved within the Football Development Centre at Myerscough College has seen Alex develop over the past two years and it’s nice to see him getting the recognition he deserves.
“If he continues to work hard I’m certain the name Alex Meaney is one we’ll hear a lot more of in the future.”
