Neil Marshall column: Now let's finish the season on a high

It was really disappointing not to win in the end but we did everything we could.

I’m proud of how we played. Everyone put a shift in.

We came out on the wrong side of the penalties but they are a lottery. But to take Chorley that far and come so close we’ve got to be proud.

It even took a deflected goal and what I think was a dodgy penalty for them to draw level in normal time.

Chorley were more direct than I thought they would be but we stopped them from doing what they wanted to.

They still had more of the possession but we probably had the best chances and played really well on the counter attack as we know we can do.

Before the game it was a proud moment for me to walk out with my son Max in what was my last final before retirement at the end of the season.

It was a great atmosphere and Max had no idea what he was supposed to be doing! But he seemed to enjoy it and it was just great to have my family by my side on a night like that.

I seem to say it a lot but the fans were unbelievable as well.

I don’t think you get fans like that elsewhere in non-league. It’s not just the number that turned out but the signing, the chanting and the noise they made.

It really does spur you on. The Chorley fans just seemed to be sitting and watching but our supporters gave us that little bit extra.

It wasn’t to be though and now it’s just all about one final play-off push.

With eight games to go it’s not in our hands, we know that. But if we can play like we did on Monday then I don’t think we’ll be far away.

I’d go as far as to say that if we can replicate our performance at the Macron then we could even win all eight.

Then things might get really interesting.
