Mossley 3-0 Lancaster City

Lancaster City’s stuttering league form continued with their third successive league defeat of the season at Seel Park on Saturday.

Mossley, traditionally a bogey side for the Dolly Blues, took advantage of a depleted City side that was without first team regulars Jacob Davis, Ryan Elderton, Lee Dodgson and Gavin Clark.

The long absence list forced head coach Darren Peacock to bring Rob Henry and Sam Bailey back into the line up ahead of schedule.

The Dolly Blues started the match brightly but created only a few half chances despite having the better of the first half.

Tom Kilifin had two snap shots sail over the bar whilst Aaron Taylor lost his footing with a decent chance inside the box to blaze wide.

The turning point of the match came when Rob Henry took a heavy challenge on the stroke of half time to add to City’s injury woes. Billy Akrigg filled in at right back and youngster Dan Birch took his place alongside Garry Hunter in midfield.

The patched up defence took just five minutes of the second half to crack.

Straight from the visitors’ goal kick the hosts counter attacked and caught the defence napping with Mitchell Bryant finding the gap between Akrigg and Ben Hudson to race in on goal and fire across ‘keeper Mike Hale to neatly open the scoring.

Lancaster to their credit never stopped running and had chances to equalise that went begging.

Kilifin through on goal hit straight at ‘keeper Ashley Frith whilst Taylor scuffed a half chance from the edge of the box straight at Frith moments later.

City’s low spirits were further dashed when Akrigg inexplicably hit a backpass straight to striker Tom Pratt who tucked away Mossley’s second of the game on 71 minutes to effectively wrap up the three points.

The game was well and truly up for City when Neil Marshall brought down Pratt just inside the box with the striker drilling the spot kick straight past Hale to make it 3-0.

Substitute Tom Woods saw a good effort saved by Frith in the dying moments of the game but City once again left Seel Park without anything to show for their efforts.

Darren Peacock’s side will look to bounce back when they host Warrington at Giant Axe tonight, Tuesday.
