Adams saw his players trail 1-0 at the break on Boxing Day thanks to Matty Pollock’s 21st minute header.

However, a brace from Carlos Mendes-Gomes and a late goal for Adam Phillips saw the Shrimps claim three points and maintain their play-off spot going into Tuesday’s game with Bolton Wanderers.

Adams said: “We are obviously delighted with the win.

“It was always going to be a difficult game. The wind was horrendous. Grimsby started well and they pushed forward and got a goal out of nothing, and I was quite glad that they only scored one at the break.

“We didn’t create any real chances in the first half but knew the game would change in the second half because of the conditions.

“We knew we would have the wind then and be able to play – and that is what happened.

“We were excellent in the second half and we created a lot of good openings with two goals from Carlos Mendes-Gomes and one from Adam Phillips giving us a very good three points.

“I was delighted for Carlos because he is making an impact on games regularly now.

“He makes great runs that defenders find hard to spot, and when he is picked out like he was by Jordan Slew and Cole Stockton today, he is always likely to be among the goals.”
