It was the first time their opponents had lost at home in League Two this season with goals from John O’Sullivan and Yann Songo’o giving the Shrimps victory.

Adams believed his side fully deserved the three points – and felt they could have won by a greater margin.

He said: “It was a really good performance and excellent to go to a place like Colchester and beat a side who hadn’t lost at home this season as well as we did.

“We went into the game knowing the threat they could be but to be fair to my players we could have, and should have, won by more.

“We could have scored four or five goals in reality. We hit the post twice, we hit the bar, their goalkeeper was man of the match and we scored two goals as well.

“Over the 90 minutes we created so many opportunities it was frightening and the only downside was we should have scored a lot more.”

After a fourth win in five, Adams added: “You can see the spirit we have in the squad by those playing and those on the bench.

“You can see the togetherness and you can see the ability. We have a lot of good players in this team and you can see the confidence as well that is going right through the squad.”
