Morecambe's players are challenged to improve

Morecambe boss Derek Adams says they must sharpen up at both ends of the pitch after Saturday’s heavy defeat at Crawley Town.

The Shrimps lost 4-0 with all four goals conceded in a sloppy second-half showing that saw Morecambe lose their spot at the top of League Two ahead of tonight’s match against Mansfield Town.

The result left the Shrimps with the league’s second worst defensive record, having conceded 13 in six games and with a goal difference of minus five.

Adams said: “At the end of the day we have 12 points on the table, but we all know our goal difference has to be better than it is at the moment.

“The teams around and about us will pick up points as well over the next few weeks, so we have to work on that goal difference and be better at both ends of the park.

“We had chances on Saturday at Crawley and didn’t take them in the first half, and we perhaps should have scored more at Oldham the week before too.

“At the other end we conceded five against Cambridge with some goals out of nothing, which we thought was a blip, but then conceded another four on Saturday with individual errors proving costly and it is something we need to all work on.

“We want to stay at the top end of the table because when you are up there, clubs view you in a different way. In the past clubs have looked at Morecambe and fancied their chances but when you are up there clubs do prepare differently to face you.

“We have a good group of players and we have been at the top end of the table with the lowest budget. We have recruited well, used the budget really well, and we have competition for places all over the team which is good and the lads have done really well – but there is still a lot to work on.”
