Morecambe's fond memories of facing Coventry at the Globe

The Sky Blues were the first ever visitors to the Shrimps’ Westgate home on August 10, 2010.

Andy Fleming wrote his name into the club’s history books by scoring twice in a 2-0 League Cup win, the side also including a certain Barry Roche between the sticks.

A crowd of 4,002 was in attendance as Fleming had a debut to remember after his move from Wrexham the previous summer, the Shrimps upsetting a side who at that time were two divisions above them.

“I only knew I was playing when I turned up to the ground and that was a great feeling,” the midfielder said at the time.

“But to go on and score both goals as well was unbelievable and it is a night I will never forget.

“When I scored the first someone said to me that I’d made history with the first goal on the new ground and that made it all the more exciting for me.

“To get another after that was brilliant and things could not have gone any better for me and the lads.”

Fleming converted Adam Rundle’s cross in first-half injury time before Rundle was again the provider for the second just after the hour mark.

The sides also have FA Cup history, the only other meeting coming in the second round of the competition back in December 2012.

Jim Bentley’s side put in a commendable performance on the day but missed out on a coveted third round berth after a 2-1 defeat at the Ricoh Arena.

Gary McSheffrey and Carl Baker were on target for the 1987 winners either side of the interval with Kevin Ellison’s goal 13 minutes from time too little, too late.
