It was announced last week the midfielder had been charged for allegedly directing a homophobic insult at an opposing player.

The FA launched an investigation into the incident after Songo’o was shown a straight red card by referee Paul Howard in the Shrimps’ home defeat to Tranmere Rovers at the end of last month.

In the aftermath of that dismissal, the club released a statement saying it ‘abhors abuse of any sort, be it on the grounds of race, colour, religion, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, age, disability or sexual orientation.’

It added the club would await the final report from the match before making any specific comment on the incident.

Songo’o collected a two-game ban for the red card, meaning he missed the matches at Stevenage and Bolton Wanderers before being charged with an ‘aggravated breach’ of FA Rule E3.

The 29-year-old has until next Wednesday, February 24, to provide a response but on Thursday afternoon, Morecambe published an update.

The club said: “Since our previous statement on the matter, Yann Songo’o has been charged by the FA and has until February 24th to respond to the charge.

“In order to respect the integrity of the FA’s investigation, the club will look to issue further comment once the process has been completed.”
