The 27-year-old former Blackpool keeper has agreed a one-year deal and moves to the Globe Arena as a back-up to Barry Roche.

He replaces Dan Nizic, who left the club at the end of last season to return to Australia.

Talking about the deal, Shrimps’ boss Jim Bentley told the club’s website: “Mark is experienced and knows the level.

“He’s a decent all-round goalkeeper and gives us good competition.

“He’s hungry to prove he can be number one and we’re very much looking forward to working with him.”

Halstead came through the ranks at Blackpool, coming off the bench when they met Chelsea in the Premier League in March 2011.

He spent five years with the club before leaving Bloomfield Road in June 2014, joining Shrewsbury Town, and subsequently figuring for Southport last season.

Halstead said: “I’m delighted to be here back playing in the league.

“It was an opportunity to resurrect my career and one I couldn’t turn down.”
