Morecambe legend Carlton to help out at North Lancashire League side

Morecambe FC’s Wembley legend Danny Carlton will be helping out at Division Two side CC Wanderers as they look to make it three promotions on the bounce.

The 30-year-old announced his retirement from football in the summer after struggling with injuries since a serious cruciate ligament injury to his right knee in September 2012.

And while he has signed a registration form the striker insists he is likely to only make the odd playing appearance while focusing on doing some coaching.

Carlton said: “I have signed up but I can’t play much because of my knee.

“My best friend (Ian Dewhirst) is the assistant manager there so I said I’d help out with the coaching and maybe play if they’re short.

“I miss being involved on a Saturday but I don’t miss 
playing.

“I enjoyed being involved in the (Men United v Prostate Cancer) charity day at the Globe but my knee blew up for about four days afterwards.

“I might come on for 10 minutes here and there because I can just about do that but I’ll mainly be helping out on the touchline as much as I’d love to be able to play all the time still.”

Carlton can’t risk damaging his knee further as he is due to have an arthroscopy, a type of keyhole surgery, to help address the problem.

Post professional football he is enjoying helping out with partner Natasha’s child-minding business as well as going into schools and community groups to help out with coaching.

The former Carlisle and Bury striker is of course also finding time to watch the Shrimps at the Globe Arena.

He said: “I’ve been down a few times this season.

“This is my home now and I still love the club.

“They’ve made a good start and can hopefully get on a winning streak again.”
