Morecambe have been handed a much-needed injury boost ahead of the big Lancashire derby with Accrington on Saturday.

The Shrimps have already lost captain Peter Murphy for three months with medial ligament damage and feared a similar injury when Aaron Wildig limped off against Sheffield United on Tuesday night.

But the midfielder has recovered well over the last couple of days and boss Jim Bentley hopes he will be fit to face Stanley at the Globe Arena.

The Shrimps boss said: “It looked pretty bad at the time with the way he left the ground.

“We’ll have to assess him but we hope he’s going to be fit.

“We did think he was going to be out for a lengthy spell because when we watched the DVD it looked like it might be medial ligament damage again.

“He just caught his foot and got nudged the wrong way.

“He’s had a bit of a pain in his shin but has responded really well so hopefully he’ll be okay.”

There is further good news on the injury front for the Shrimps with Adam Dugdale and Tom Barkhuizen, who have missed the opening two games of the season, returning to training on Thursday.

Dugdale picked up a freak ankle injury in pre-season training while Barkhuizen has been struggling with a thigh problem.
