Morecambe bring Wembley winner Davies back on loan

The 27-year-old has signed a one-month deal as both number one Barry Roche and his understudy Andreas Arestidou struggle with injury.

Roche is set to see a specialist about the hip injury that saw him miss the majority of pre-season while Arestidou is battling a stomach muscle problem.

Davies is seen by boss Jim Bentley as the perfect man to provide cover having lost his starting place at Highbury to Chris Maxwell towards the end of last season.

Bentley said: “We’ve got a bit of a problem with Barry Roche at the moment.

“He’s had to see a specialist with a hip injury and we’re just waiting on the results of that.

“We haven’t got him for the weekend and Andreas (Arestidou) hasn’t been training for the last week or so with a stomach muscle problem so we’ve got no ‘keeper.

“I think everyone’s seen the last couple of games we’ve had (goalkeeping coach) Lee Jones on the bench and we had to get someone in for Sunday’s game (against Exeter). 
“I’m sure Scott will fit in, he knows me, he knows the club, he knows quite a few of the lads, he’s very experienced at this level and he’s a top ‘keeper.

“He’ll come in and we’ll see where we go from there.

“Hopefully Andreas won’t be too long but we just don’t know about Barry Roche at the moment.”

Davies, a product of the Shrimps youth system, famously came off the bench in the 2007 Conference play-off semi-final against York to replace the injured Steven Drench before playing in the 2-1 win over Exeter in the final.

It is some what fitting then that the ‘keeper’s return comes against the Grecians at the Globe Arena on Sunday.

Bentley said: “I was talking to him about picking his number and he wants the number 30 which he wore against Exeter in the final.

“He’s one of the Wembley heroes. There’s only me left at the club and it’s nice to get him back.

“I’m sure he’ll do well for us.”
