Morecambe boss lauds his players after Scunthorpe United victory

Derek Adams believed his Morecambe players got what they deserved after posting a 4-1 win against Scunthorpe United.

Having taken one point from their previous three games, the Shrimps climbed into fourth place in League Two thanks to a comprehensive victory at the Mazuma Stadium.

Cole Stockton and Carlos Mendes Gomes scored in the first half with Sam Lavelle and Yann Songo’o netting after the break.

The sole disappointment of the evening was the visitors’ late consolation goal through Alfie Beestin, which denied Morecambe a third clean sheet in six matches.

“It just carries on the way we try and play,” Adams said afterwards.

“We play quickly, we pressed Scunthorpe from the start of the game and we got the reward with a fantastic goal from Cole Stockton, another goal from Carlos Gomes, a tap-in from Yann Songo’o and a good header from Sam.

“It’s good to see the goals have been shared out. The performance was good but we could have scored more, we had a lot of good opportunities.

“That’s why we’re the fourth highest goalscorers in the league, we create so many good opportunities in open play.”

Stockton and Mendes Gomes scored their 11th and 13th goals of the season respectively, though John O’Sullivan was arguably Morecambe’s man of the match.

He weighed in with three assists, creating both first-half goals before seeing Lavelle convert from his corner.

“John O’Sullivan has come on leaps and bounds since I came to the club,” Adams said.

“Now, he understands he has to run back as well as get forward.

“I think he defends well but, not only that, he gets up the pitch and creates openings for his team-mates.”
