Morecambe assistant boss Ken McKenna: Little things are hurting us at the moment

Morecambe’s assistant boss Ken McKenna insists The Shrimps aren’t far away from putting a decent run together - despite defeat at bottom side York City on Saturday.

Goals from Dave Winfield and James Berrett helped The Minstermen end a run of nine straight defeats as they held on after Jamie Devitt’s goal had set up a nervy finish for the hosts.

The Shrimps were well below their best but McKenna pointed the finger at “little lapses” both in defence and attack at the final whistle as Morecambe slipped to 17th in League 2.

He said: “We’ve got a good squad of players here and we all think we should be doing a little bit better than what we are.

“It’s little tiny things that are undoing us.

“We’ve created a couple of good chances and have scored plenty of goals this season.

“But it’s the little lapses when we get a good opportunity where we just seem to be falling short.

“It’s our job as a staff and as a team to iron them out and get us into the half of the table where we feel we should be.”

The Shrimps number two felt that his side had done enough for a point with both Aaron Wildig and Anton Forrester coming close late on.

He said: “We’ve got in a couple of times first half trying to get that first goal and Aaron’s (Wildig) had a great chance where he’s rounded the ‘keeper.

“It’s just little lapses in concentration.

“In the end I think we’ve been a little bit unlucky.

“We’ve had good chances, as have they, but I thought the effort we put in towards the end probably warranted a draw.”

The Shrimps’ next chance to improve on 17th comes at home to Mansfield on Boxing Day.

McKenna said: “We’ll take today on the chin.

“No doubt we’ll get a bit of stick, people will say ‘it’s bottom of the league’.

“But the circumstances have changed here with loan players and some experienced players coming back from injury and you can see how competitive they were today.

“We’re looking forward to the next one and trying to get the results to get us where we need to be.”
