Morecambe add new blood at both ends of the pitch

Ashvir Singh Johal has further added to his Morecambe squad with three signings announced in fewer than 24 hours.

Having already landed defenders Ashton McWilliams and Timmy Akindileni on loan from Aston Villa and QPR respectively earlier this month, the Shrimps’ boss has brought in further new faces at either end of the pitch.

The first confirmed arrival was former Birmingham City and Brentford centre-half Harlee Dean, who comes to the Mazuma Mobile Stadium with more than 500 league and cup appearances under his belt.

Dean (34), who also played for Sheffield Wednesday as well as Dagenham and Redbridge, has been without a club since being released by Reading last summer.

The second signing to be announced was that of a current Birmingham City defender, with Tommy Fogarty joining on loan for the rest of the campaign.

A 21-year-old Northern Ireland U21 international, Fogarty played against the Shrimps earlier this season while on loan at Boston United.

That was his third temporary move away from St Andrew’s following previous spells with Ebbsfleet United and Dunfermline.

Their arrivals were followed by that of Chris Popov, Leicester City’s Wales U21 striker who has also joined the club on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old joined Leicester five years ago after being released by Manchester United’s Academy.

He played once for Leicester’s first team last season, appearing as a substitute in their Carabao Cup win against Tranmere Rovers.

That was followed by a 12-game goalless stint on loan with Barrow AFC in League Two.

All three are set to be available for selection when Morecambe visit FC Halifax Town this evening.
