Morecambe 2-1 Torquay

MORECAMBE goal hero Laurence Wilson admitted he had one of his worst ever games for the Shrimps before scoring two penalties in the last four minutes to give his side a dramatic win.

Wilson, who has taken over penalty duties from the injured Phil Jevons, beat Scott Bevan twice to give Morecambe their third successive win in the most dramatic of fashions.

Wilson said: “I had a terrible game, probably one of the worst I have ever had for the club so I was glad to put the penalties away.

“I have to admit I was a bit nervous for the second one because I knew if I scored we would probably win the game because there was no time left.

“One of their lads tried to put me off and told me to put the second one the other way from the first, so I did.

“To have won the game in such style was great because it keeps our run of form going. It’s four wins out of five now and we are playing some good stuff and finding some consistency at last and hopefully we can keep this run going for as long as possible.’’

Both penalties came after fouls on Morecambe right winger Mark Duffy as he was brought down by Guy Branston for the first and Ashley Hemmings for the second.

And they came after Torquay had looked set to take the points after substitute Billy Kee fired the visitors into the lead 12 minutes from time with a 20-yard shot that beat the excellent Barry Roche low to his left hand side.

It was almost a shock to see Roche beaten as he produced a string of fine saves during the game to help Morecambe take the points.

The match itself saw the Shrimps start brightly with Duffy forcing Stuart Bevan into a good save low to his left after some good work from Chris Shuker.

But Torquay came back strongly and Roche was called upon to make two decent blocks in quick succession from Chris Zebroski and Eunan O’Kane as the visitors tried their luck from distance.

Zebroski also went close with a shot on the angle that flew inches wide of the Morecambe goal as the Gulls threatened on the break.

Morecambe produced good moments of their own however with Duffy blazing a shot into the side netting and Bevan saving sharply low down again after a smart strike from Shuker as both sides struggled to make headway in the atrocious conditions.

The second half saw Torquay start the better with both Lee Mansell and Wroe flashing shots wide from the edge of the area and Mansell seeing another effort well saved by the legs of Roche before Kee opened the scoring to spark the frantic finale to the game.

Few could have predicted how the game would have ended but the Shrimps showed great spirit and resolve to take the points against all odds.
