Goals either side of half-time gave Morecambe a much-needed first home win of the season against a poor Chesterfield side on Tuesday night.

Richard Brodie teed up first Gary McDonald in first-half stoppage time and then Lewis Alessandra shortly after the break as The Shrimps picked up their first victory at the Globe Arena at the fifth time of asking.

It was a nervy start from both sides as Chesterfield chased a first three-point haul on their travels.

Neal Trotman had the best early effort for either side, the big Spireites number five just failing to connect properly with a header from a Craig Westcarr corner.

In a poor first half with very few openings, Lewis Alessandra fired across goal just before the half hour mark after Andy Fleming had presented him with Morecambe's first half chance.

Chesterfield's best opening of the half fell to Westcarr who saw his shot from just inside the area beaten away by Roche after a Robbie Threlfall error let the Chesterfield man in five minutes before the break.

And just as if it looked like a lacklustre first period was going to end goalless, the Shrimps took the lead in first-half injury time.

Brodie, on his best performance in a Morecambe shirt, hung up a cross after some good work down the left and Gary McDonald was on hand at the far post to side foot a volley past Richard O'Donnell and put the home side in front.

The on-loan Fleetwood striker was then at the heart of the Shrimps' second goal early in the second half, beating his man down the left and whipping in a pinpoint cross for Alessandra to volley home from close range with 52 minutes on the clock.

The Shrimps lost left back Threlfall to what looked like a hamstring injury just before the hour mark but had the better of things after doubling their lead, Alessandra firing into the side netting after the ball broke to him in the box on 62 minutes.

The former Oldham man then headed a Will Haining cross over the bar five minutes later.

Brodie should have capped a man of the match performance with a goal of his own in stoppage time but took too long to get his shot away when played in by Jordan Burrow, allowing the visitors to clear.
