More of the same for Morecambe this pre-season

Jim Bentley has opted for more of the same when it comes to Morecambe's preparations for the new season.

The Shrimps have traditionally made a fast start in their Wembley-winning captain’s five years in charge meaning that little will change for the players this pre-season when they return on Tuesday.

Bentley said: “You can’t go too far away from what we’ve done over previous years.

“We’ve always started the season particularly well and it’ll be the same amount of training days, the same amount of games.

“Two of them will be away from home to non-league clubs and four will be at home.

“It’s exactly the same as what we’re used to.

“Our pre-season is set-up in February, March time and it’s tried and tested and has done well.

“We’ve actually had one or two other coaches and managers ask us over the last year or so what we do to get off to such a fantastic start.

“We won’t go too far away from that and hopefully we’ll reap the rewards again just like we have done in previous seasons.”

After a tough end to the season Bentley has managed some time with his family and is now keen to get going as The Shrimps look to bounce back from a difficult end to the season that saw them finish 21st place finish in League 2.

There has been plenty of activity already with the players undergoing some physical tests last week.

He said: “It takes a couple of weeks to recharge and then you want to get back at it.

“I’ve been quite busy. The lads were in last week for fitness testing with (fitness coach) Chris Squirrell and that went well.

“When you know it’s coming you’re desperate to get back and get back at it.”

Morecambe’s first pre-season game sees them travel to Evo-Stik First Division North side Bamber Bridge on July 12.
