Molyneux relishing battle for starting spot at Morecambe

The former Accrington winger came off the bench to score his first Shrimps goal in the thrilling 4-2 win at Yeovil on Saturday.

The 26-year-old had impressed in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win over Walsall at left back but dropped out of the side as Laurence Wilson returned from injury.

Now Molyneux hopes he has done enough to give Jim Bentley plenty to think about ahead of the trip to bottom side Newport County on Saturday.

He said: “It always nice to get a goal.

“I played midweek and the gaffer said I’d been a bit unlucky not to start the game.

“My peers and my team mates and the players who play in the same positions as me, Jamie Devitt and Tom Barkhuizen, are on fire so you can’t really complain.

“All I’ve got to do is if I get a chance I’ve got to make an impact like I did today.

“Three points was the most important but it’s good to get off the mark as well.”

The win at Yeovil was another rollercoaster away day for The Shrimps.

Having seen a three-goal lead slip at Portsmouth in the 3-3 draw, Bentley’s side came from 2-0 down against 10 men to win 4-2 at Huish Park.

Molyneux said: “It was just a crazy game.

“I came on against 10 men and we were dominating.

“It was just a bit of huff and puff at times. We had to be a bit more patient.

“I felt like we were comfortable it was just about managing it properly and staying switched on.

“Thankfully we did that and got the goals.”

The win completed a seven-day spell where The Shrimps have scored 10 goals, with 13 coming in their last four games.

Molyneux said: “After the first couple of games people were doubting us about goals.

“We lost a talisman in Jack (Redshaw) and I hadn’t got off the mark and Kev (Ellison) hadn’t got off the mark.

“It’s refreshing now though and gives all the lads confidence, getting goals from all over the park.

“We’re certainly not complaining about that.”

Morecambe will look to continue their good run at basement boys Newport County on Saturday with Molyneux hoping for a more sedate afternoon.

He said: “We go to Newport next and we’ve got momentum with us now.

“We’re confident but it’s going to be a tough place to go.

“I’ve played there a few times and the crowd get behind them and they are a very physical side.

“We’ll have a gameplan and we’ll take it from there.

“A clean sheet would be nice this time and maybe another three points!”
