McKenna: Luton win one of best of season

Morecambe’s win over Luton was up there with their best of the season according to assistant boss Ken McKenna.

McKenna stood in for manager Jim Bentley who missed the 3-0 win over the high-flying Hatters with illness.

The visitors had to play more than an hour with 10 men after captain Steve McNulty’s red card but it was another encouraging display from the Shrimps on home soil.

McKenna said: “It’s one of the best wins of the season.

“It’s difficult to compare it to other games because of the circumstances.

“We started the game really well and wanted to put their back four under pressure which we did.

“We got the early goal from a good set piece which gave us a little bit of confidence and then the big game-changer came with big Steve being sent off.

“He’s a key player for them and it made it difficult for them but to be fair they were brave and kept on coming.

“We had to defend but we did that well and with a little bit more quality in the final third we could have scored a couple more.”

McKenna hoped the win would cheer up the Shrimps’ under-the-weather boss and was looking forward to him making a swift return.

He said: “There’s been a bit of a bug flying round with everyone.

“The boss was up all night, his kids have been poorly this week and he’s picked something up.

“He was in a bad way this morning but I hope that’s cheered him up.

“I’ve missed him today, driving in without my mate.

“I spend more time with Jim than anyone else. We’re up and down that motorway and we’re in here every day and we work late.

“I missed him and I’ll be glad when he’s back.”
