Chris McCready gave Morecambe a much-needed injury boost as he returned to action in the Shrimps’ draw with Blackpool on Saturday.

Jim Bentley’s side played out a 1-1 draw in a behind-closed-doors game at the Seasiders’ training ground Squires Gate.

And after the news that Jack Redshaw is to be ruled out for up to seven months due to hip surgery, the return of McCready, who underwent an ankle operation in April and was expected to miss the majority of pre-season, was a welcome sight for the Shrimps.

The central defender played 45 minutes of the game and reported no side effects from the run out.

Manager’s son Tom Ince won and converted a penalty for Blackpool to put the hosts ahead just after the hour mark.

Paul Ince’s side almost doubled their advantage soon after but Craig Cathcart’s header was cleared off the line.

Stewart Drummond levelled for the visitors late in the second half when he volleyed home a Robbie Threlfall corner.

Marcus Marshall, Danny Carlton, Will Bell and Andy Parrish all weren’t risked due to niggles.

Goal scorer Drummond and new signing Tony Diagne were the only players to get a full 90 minutes.

Shrimps boss Bentley said: “Chris has been outstanding for us over the past couple of seasons and hardly missed a game until this injury.

“It is important that we don’t rush anything but he did really well and that was encouraging.

“It was a really good workout for both sides and a good game for us to have.”

Morecambe are next in pre-season action against Middlesbrough at the Globe Arena on Wednesday, July 17.

The game against the Championship side kicks off at 7.45pm.
