MORECAMBE suffered their 12th defeat of the season against Lincoln at Sincil Bank on Saturday.
Despite dominating possession for long periods the Shrimps made it six games without a win as two first–half goals from Ashley Grimes gave the Imps their sixth win in seven games and added to Morecambe’s growing frustrations.
The on–loan Millwall striker, who scored against Morecambe at the Globe Arena earlier in the campaign, opened the scoring on nine minutes.
Andy Fleming and Tony Capaldi conspired to give the ball away in their own half, Luke Howell took advantage and played in Grime who kept his cool to break past Andy Parrish and poke the ball past Barry Roche.
Morecambe hit back with Phil Jevons heading a Kevan Hurst cross straight at Trevor Carson and the home keeper then had to make a decent save from Hurst’s long range–effort
But the Shrimps were undone again three minutes before half time with a goal of quality.
Grimes took possession of the ball in the box with his back to goal but turned superbly to beat Roche low to his left with a curler from 12 yards out.
From there Morecambe dominated but were denied by some superb saves from Lincoln keeper Carson.
The on–loan Sunderland keeper tipped over a long–range effort from Scott Brown on the stroke of half time and continued to frustrate the Shrimps in the second period with superb low saves from Jimmy Spencer and Stewart Drummond as both got on the end of dangerous Capaldi throw– ins.
Spencer was guilty of missing a golden chance when he totally missed his kick after being teed up perfectly by Rundle who was then also denied by Carson as he got down low to his left to block a low curling cross that would have sneaked into the bottom left hand corner.
Morecambe’s frustrating day was capped in the latter stages when Fleming crashed a fine volley against the crossbar to deny the Shrimps a rousing finale.
