“Liam is a fantastic professional, who has had a really strong career”: Morecambe boss beefs up the backline further

Morecambe have added to their defensive ranks with the signing of central defender Liam Hogan from Rochdale.

The 37-year-old has joined the Shrimps on an 18-month contract, having left Rochdale after making 47 appearances since joining them in September 2024.

Hogan’s 16-year career has also featured spells with FC Halifax Town, Fleetwood Town, Tranmere Rovers, Gateshead, Salford City, Stockport County and Oldham Athletic.

In that time, he has won five promotions: two each with Halifax and Salford in addition to one at Stockport.

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley said: “Liam is a fantastic professional, who has had a really strong career.

“He has played all around the North West. He knows the level.

“When I have spoken to people, they’ve said he’s got a really good way about him: good professionalism, all the type of things we want at the football club moving forward.

“I’ve tried to sign him before, so I’m really pleased to have him on board.”

Hogan becomes the second new face at the back in a week-and-a-half, following on from Kyle Jameson’s arrival earlier in the month.

He leaves a Rochdale team chasing promotion back to the EFL for a Morecambe side trying to avoid a third relegation in four seasons.

Nevertheless, he is looking forward to having a positive influence around the Mazuma Mobile Stadium.

Hogan told Morecambe’s website: “Coming from Rochdale, it’s a little bittersweet in terms of I’ve left a really good group there and I wish them all the very best. Hopefully they go and get the promotion.

“Attention for me turns to another job I’ve not actually really been used to in terms of being at this end of the table, so I hope to bring a lot of positivity, a lot of energy, a helping hand for the group really because they’ve shown last game (the 4-0 win against Eastleigh) that they can definitely do it, so I’m really optimistic about them.

“I’d had a couple of chats with Jim previously at other clubs that he’s tried to get me in. He feels that my character will be best suited to come into this group at this time.

“I know some of the lads and there’s some quality within the squad, there’s goals within the squad.”
