Clitheroe have swooped for Lancaster City's title-winning captain Ricky Mercer

The defender, who skippered the Dolly Blues to the NPL First Division North championship last year, has decided to make the move to Shawbridge and will take the armband next season.

The 34-year-old returned to Giant Axe in 2015 and enjoyed a hugely successful time working under boss Phil Brown

Clitheroe boss Stuart Mellish was thrilled to secure Mercer's signature.

"I'm absolutely delighted to get him," said Mellish

"It's a real coup for the club. I've tried to sign him on four previous occasions when I was at Warrington Town but always failed.

"I've finally managed to get him. He'll be our captain for the coming season.

"He has vast experience, he's fit, energetic and has great leadership skills. He's a real leader on the football pitch and he'll be my eyes and ears out there. He's a true professional who leads by example."
