Lancaster City 0-0 Workington Reds (Workington won 5-4 on pens)

The tie was an even affair with neither side able to break the deadlock, taking the game to spot kicks –Adam Sumner and Hannu Tam both missed as the Cumbrian side progressed to the quarter finals.

Workington created the first real chance of the match when Conor Tinnion’s cross from the left was taken down by Dave Symington, but he couldn’t get his shot away and the danger was cleared.

Paul Jarvis had the Dolly Blues’ first attempt at goal, but he was thwarted by Workington goalkeeper Aaran Taylor, and City went close again when Glenn Steel’s overhead kick was hit straight at the Reds’ stopper.

Steel brought another save out of Taylor soon after but his shot from the edge of the penalty area was well held.

Mamadou Djabi had City’s next chance but after cutting in from the left his shot went wide.

Elliot Wynne was forced into a save when a long clearance by Taylor in the Workington goal went over the head over Steve Williams and Tinnion was through on goal, but his first time shot was comfortably saved.

Djabi went close once again for City but his header went wide of the post, with Taylor left stranded, and just a minute later the Dolly Blues had another chance to break the deadlockwhen the ball was played into the Workington penalty area from the left.

Williams miscued the initial effort, and Djabi fired over with the follow up in what was the best chance of the game so far as the two sides went into the half time break all square.

Workington almost made a perfect start to the second half when Wynne raced out of his goal and smashed the ball against his own centre back, Adam Anson, but luckily for the City keeper Steel was on hand to clear. Wynne was in the thick of the action again in the 50th when Scott Allison was through on goal but the City stopper blocked the shot with his legs to deny Workington again.

Lancaster had another chance when a Sam Bailey freekick was met by the head of Steel, but it fell straight into the arms of Taylor in the Workington goal.

Bailey then curled a freekick around the wall from just outside the area but Taylor gathered in with ease, while at the other end Mellen had a shot on goal but it lacked power and failed to trouble Wynne.

Wilson came close to opening thescoring when a Symington cross was missed by two City defenders but his shot went wide of the target from close rannge.

Just a minute later Billy Akrigg brought another save out Taylor with a shot from the edge of the box, and soon after Williams lofted a shot onto the roof of the net after Bailey’s long throw in had initially been cleared.

Tam had a great chance to win the game for City but he headed wide from six yards out, and the blues were almost made to pay for the miss when Waterston ran through at the other end, only for Wynne to deny him.

Allison headed against the bar in extra time for Workington, but the game ended 0-0 and the visitors went through to the next round after winning the shoot-out 5-4.
