Lancaster City create football academy

Lancaster City have set up an exciting new football academy in parnership with renowned sporting centre of excellence Myerscough College.

Offering a post-16 programme, combining football with education, the academy will begin at the start of next academic year in September.

The Dolly Blues chose Myerscough due to its outstanding academic performance, state of the art football and sport facilities and track record of producing footballing talent that have played at a high level in the non-league and professional game.

The college has a history of developing players who have played at first-team level, including current city ace Hannu Tam and before him Danny Shearwood.

In addition a number former Myerscough students have featured for Lancaster City before going on to turn professional like Alex Kenyon, Rhys Taylor and Joe Bunney to name just a few.

“The track record Myerscough have for developing talent and players who can step up to the level required and beyond is phenomenal,” said general manager Shane Hudson. “You see Hannu in our first team, alongside others who have featured for City, which makes the partnership a no-brainer.”

As part of the club’s development strategy, the post-16 educational academy was the next logical step in our players pathway to ensure young players are offered the opportunity to play for Lancaster City

First team manager Phil Brown said: “Following on from the successful set-up of the Lancaster City FC Development Centres which are run in partnership with Orange Soccer at a junior age range, the academy was the next logical step.

“The post-16 Academy students will then be in a position where they can progress into the reserve team and try to break into the first tteam at the pinnacle of the pathway.”

The academy will see the players blend a BTEC Academic Course at Level 2 or 3 with their footballing education, training and participation in matches for Lancaster City in the college league system and also in the FA Youth Cup.

The bulk of the course will be run from the exceptional facilities at Myerscough College with offshoot activity and some competitive fixtures taking place at Giant Axe.

In addition, enabling us to continue with our developing links with the Isle of Man and the Isle of Man FA, Myerscough is able to offer accommodation to students who wish to live on campus.

That will enable players from the island who wish to be part of the academy the logistical opportunity to be part of this exciting new venture.

The club will be holding a number of advice evenings on the following dates for potential students and parents to find out more and ask questions at:

Netsbusters Bar, Giant Axe Stadium, Lancaster City FC, West Road, Lancaster, LA1 5PE
